CFIHOS 2.0, from handover to harmonisation

When an industrial project is handed over from contractor to operator, thousands of objects, documents and attributes change hands. Without a shared specification it becomes a puzzle whose pieces do not fit. CFIHOS exists to solve exactly that.

CFIHOS, the Capital Facilities Information Handover Specification, is run as industry practice under IOGP and rests on ISO 15926. In November 2025 version 2.0 arrived, the biggest update so far, with an extended reference data library, support for collecting greenhouse gas data from projects, and better handling of spare parts.

But the interesting part is not the list of new features. It is the direction. At the 2025 CFIHOS meeting the talk was of a shift from handover to harmonisation, from moving data once at the end to letting standards, formats and systems work together across the whole lifecycle.

For those of us who work with asset data every day, it is a welcome move. A good handover is not built at the end, it is built from day one. We follow how CFIHOS develops and share what we learn here.
