DEXPI 2.0 and the open P&ID format

A process diagram, a P&ID, is one of the most valuable documents in a plant. Yet it often gets locked into the format of the program it was drawn in, and loses meaning when opened somewhere else.

DEXPI, Data Exchange in the Process Industry, solves this with a vendor-neutral, open data model for P&IDs. Version 2.0 from late 2025 unifies the format in a single XML serialisation and extends it with process and block flow diagrams.

What makes DEXPI credible is the company it keeps. Behind it stand both tool vendors like Autodesk, AVEVA, Bentley and Siemens and large end users like BASF and Bayer. When the people who build the tools and the people who use them pull in the same direction, something happens.

We believe in open formats for one simple reason, your data should belong to you, not to your program. A diagram that can be read back and forth between systems is a diagram you can trust for twenty years.
